Domain names are the official address for your website on the Internet. Visitors find your website by typing your domain name (in the format of a website URL) in the URL bar in an internet browser, just like how a mailman finds your home by following a physical address with street name and apartment number. You need to register the domain name via a domain name registrar in order to own the domain name on the internet. You can complete the purchase and registration process with any of the following domain registrars. You may also transfer your domain registration from one registrar to another. Fees and services might vary among different registrars. Generally domain registration requires a yearly fee. If you do not renew the registration by the expiration date, you lose your ownership of the domain name.

Domain names always have two or more parts separated by dots and typically consist of some form of the name of an organization and a three letter or more suffix. For example, the domain name for Google is "google.com". The three letter suffix is used to describe the type of organization. Suffix such as .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .name are available for public to use. For domain registrants outside the US, they might also have to add a country suffix after the organization suffix. For example, the domain name for Yahoo Japan is yahoo.co.jp. Sometimes you find the name you want to register for your website is no longer available. Under such circumstances, you might seek alternative names or find ways to purchase the domain name from the current owner.

If you only need to register one domain name and know what you are doing with launching websites, pricing is the most important factor to consider in choosing a domain registra. However if you are not very technology savvy and if you plan to start with a basic website soon, you might want to consider web hosting service and email services together with domain registrar. It’ll make your life much easier if you have all of them in the same place. Almost all domain registrars also provide simple hosting solutions where you can launch a one pager or a small scale website. Once you are ready to scale and need business oriented hosting services, you can find web hosting vendors here.
