SEO and PPC are effective techniques when targeting at customers who are in active searching mode.  Affiliate marketing is more effective when targeting at customers who are in browsing and content consumption mode. Your affiliate can be anything from a website or a email newsletter - basically anywhere your potential customers might be spending their time online. They follow the links to your website while they are visiting other web properties that contains content directly or indirectly related to your products and services. A simple example would be the case of an eater who follows a promotional link to a restaurant’s website while reading a local foodie’s restaurant review article. The restaurant is not directly paying the local foodie for the promotional link. Usually it’s done via a third party network. Mainly there are two types of affiliate networks. One is called CPA (cost-per-action), where the advertiser (you as the merchant) pays when users take an action on the affiliate site, including clicking a link, viewing a page, completing a lead form, and etc. The other one is called CPS (cost-per-sale), where the advertiser pays only when a sale is completed.

Affiliate marketing usually involves three parties: the merchants/advertisers who would like to drive affiliate traffic to their websites, the publishers who have relevant content and traffic to their site, and a third party network who match the two. Choosing a reliable network and relevant publishers are extremely important to ensure the quality and success of your affiliate marketing program. If placed well, these links can be truly useful to customers. If not, they are considered spam and can easily annoy visitors, which hurts both the publisher and the merchant. The list below gives you a good overview of well known and trustworthy affiliate marketing networks that you can choose from. Select your partner wisely and always pay close look at your performance.
