The more visible your website is to major search engines, the more likely visitors will see your website in search results, therefore you’ll see more visitors to your website. SEO practices can be categorized into two groups: on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

On-page SEO techniques involve writing website content that is relevant to the keywords people are using to search, editing html code to allow search engines to index and understand the content on the website. Commonly used practices include optimizing meta data (title tags, meta descriptions, heading tags, alt tags, etc.), incorporating selective keywords in the content copy, using structured and well-formatted URL, and etc. Off-page SEO techniques usually involve link building so that more reputable websites point to your website. As a general rule, using SEO best practices and developing good and useful content to your website visitors is always a better approach than trying to manipulating search engines and using black hat techniques. Unethnical practices might help you reach good ranking quickly, but are  also very likely to get your site penalized in the long run.
