One of the biggest concerns of building an eCommerce website is to process the payment securely and to protect customer personal information. Most hosted eCommerce platforms include payment process as part of their services. For those who use eCommerce CMS, most of the time payment is part of the solution as well. Shopping cart software & payment services are best applicable to a specific group of users whose sites are running on a non-eCommerce platform and would like to add eCommerce functions to the site so they can accept payment on their websites.

There are two ways to do it it. A licensed shopping cart is not a hosted solution, in which case you get the software, and host it anywhere, and you can fully customize it. There are also vendors who can manage the shopping cart and provide payment service for you - when your visitors press the check out or buy button on your site, they will be taken to the third party payment service provider's site. Although you can customize the look and feel of the payment page to match your own site, you don’t store any customer data because your visitors are no longer on your site after they click on the “buy” button. From there your visitors may choose whatever payment they prefer (credit cards, debit cards, paypal or other virtual payments).

If you already have an existing website and you wanted to turn it into a website where you can sell stuff and accept payment, finding a shopping cart solution or payment service vendor might be more cost effective than building an ecommerce store from scratch. This way you don’t lose all the assets you have built with your old site and still able to transform it into something that’s ecommerce friendly.
